Finally!

On Thursday, September 22, 2011 Java Glaze Cafe finally opened its doors!

Java Glaze resides in the building which housed Koehler Hardware Co. from the 1890's to the late 1950's. Many Reading residents still have fond memories of toy shopping and such in the old hardware store. From the 1960's to 2005, the building was the commissary for Angelo's Pizza.

Over the years the building suffered from a massive fire, the storefronts were removed, and aluminum siding was installed over much of the brick.

In 2005 the building was purchased by its current owner and slowly renovated back to its full glory. Though not a historical restoration, the remodel stayed true to the character of the original building. Care was also taken to make the building energy efficient.

Exterior walls were studded and filled with blown-in insulation. Drop ceilings were replaced by insulated drywall ceilings. The old boiler was replaced by 5 energy efficient heat pumps and furnace systems. The boarded up storefronts were rebuilt. The aluminum siding was removed, a new cornice and new brackets were installed. New energy efficient windows were installed. The plumbing and electric was completely redone throughout. Upstairs, the small apartments were gutted and turned into one large loft-style apartment.

The final stage of the restoration addressed the retail spaces on the first floor. The smaller retail space was finished first. Colorful Soles Shoe Store resided there from 2008 to 2010. The final space to be remodeled was the area that Java Glaze Cafe now occupies. A full commercial kitchen streches across the back and the seating area entails the rest of the first floor. The hardwood flooring was repaired and refinished, interior brick walls were stripped of damaged plaster and resealed.

During this 6 year restoration, the Reading residents watched with anticipation and patience. We hope it was worth the wait! The final result is an energy efficient, hip, historic building with all the updated amenities and, of course, home to a new cafe! Java Glaze is very happy to be in Reading and very thankful for the encouraging words during this long process.
